The complex and culturally diverse environments of northern and central Australia pose particular challenges for policy development and service delivery. In these contexts, the standard 'off the shelf' ways of thinking and acting don't always work.

My approach has evolved from working in these environments, where creative problem solving and practical results mean:

• new and imaginative thinking, coupled with respect for what has already been achieved

• taking account of both the evidence base and the local context

• being able to see the big picture while maintaining a careful attention to detail
